X Topic Abstract

In one of our projects that we recently launched under Agile methodology, we were looking into finding opportunities to automate as much and as early as possible. Our solution included communication between client and server application through web services. This created an opportunity for my team to test the solution through its business layer even before the presentation layer was ready. We used Postman to test the web services and through automation of web services we were able to speed up the feedback loop and at the same time start the automation process much earlier in SDLC.

Although testing of web services or API's through tools like Postman and SOAPUI is not a new concept, our approach of diversifying the automation portfolio was new. Traditionally, we automated the presentation layer of the application through tools like Selenium or QTP, which is better than manual testing but it is still fragile, making it costly to maintain and time-consuming to run. In short, development of our new system that incorporated APIs allowed us to diversify our automation portfolio with automated API test suite. As a result, we were able to reduce the cost of automation by 77% and reduce the feedback loop to the developers by 88%. The resulting cost and time savings were astounding and lead to use of the same approach in other projects.
